"My angel, my all...my other self. Just a few words today, and that in pencil. Yours. Only tomorrow will I know for certain where I am to stay...a worthless waste of time and such. Why this deep sorrow? If we could be united, we would feel this pain no longer. Where I am, you are with me too. Soon we shall live together, and what a life it will be!

The journey was dreadful. I did not arrive here until 4 in the morning. At the last stop, they told me not to travel at night and tried to frighten me about a forest...but that only tempted me The coach had to break down on such a terrible road for no reason. Just a country road. Lo stereotipo dell'agente segreto ideale è scolpito con tale forza nel nostro immaginario che chiunque, anche il più profano degli spettatori, sarebbe in grado di descriverlo: di bell'aspetto e desiderate dalle donne come James Bond, in grado di scalare vette impossibili o di sfuggire a pericolosi inseguimenti come i più recenti Ethan Hunt e Jason Bourne, le spie cinematografiche hanno finito per preferire il glamour all'intrigo, parti di un gioco che ha fatto della spettacolarità e del disimpegno quasi un marchio di fabbrica.

Lo sa bene il re della Spy Story John Le Carrè, all'anagrafe David John Moore Cornwell, che ispirato dalla sua vera esperienza nell'MI6(il Secret Intelligent Service) ha scritto storie meno alla moda di quelle del collega Ian Fleming, ma senza dubbio dotate di un fascino e di una classe non comuni.

Forti di uno stile inconfondibile, intrecci ambiziosi e assoluto equilibrio, a dispetto di una minore appetibilità di massa i romanzi dello scrittore inglese sono comunque riusciti a conquistare il  grande schermo: dopo "la spia che venne dal freddo", "la Casa Russia", "il Sarto di Panama" e "il Giardiniere Tenace", adesso è la volta di "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", una delle sue opere più famose e attese, che era già stata trasposta nel 1979 in una serie televisiva di successo con Alex Guinness.
