Tom Hanks, storia di un brav'uomo alla corte di Hollywood

Chi azzarda paragonarlo a un moderno James Stewart non ha forse tutti i torti: con un curriculum costellato di interpretazioni in cui si impone all'uomo comune di fare appello a tutto il suo coraggio per diventare un eroe invocato a gran voce da circostanze avverse, Tom Hanks è uno di quei attori che tutti potremmo riconoscere in mezzo alla folla e col quale ci fermeremmo a conversare volentieri, rassicurati dalla familiarità del suo volto e da quegli occhi gentili che hanno illuminato tanti personaggi rimasti per sempre nella storia del cinema più vicina al cuore del grande pubblico.

La relazione fra sport e cinema è un love affair complicato e altalenante: amanti del grande spettacolo e dei colpi di scena, delle storie di uomini testardi e caparbi pronti a battersi fino alla fine per raggiungere il loro obiettivo e avere la meglio su un degno avversario, rinvigoriti dall'urlo della folla in delirio e dalla devozione di innumerevoli fan i colossi dell'intrattenimento comunicano col pubblico seguendo regole non particolarmente distanti, eppure non sempre i due sono in grado di trovare la formula vincente per unire le forze, investendo in un lungometraggio di finzione che sappia rendere l'agone sportivo elettrizzante ben al di là dei circoli degli appassionati o degli esperti del settore.

Proprio una formula ( il gioco di parole era dovuto) ha permesso a Ron Howard, regista altalenante che alterna in modo imprevedibile pallidi Blockbuster a piccoli capolavori degni di tutta la nostra attenzione, di realizzare uno dei migliori titoli della sua attuale filmografia.
Dedicato al mondo poco mainstream della Formula 1 e alla storica rivalità fra i piloti Niki Lauda e James Hunt, Rush è la dimostrazione di come il caro Richie Cunningham non abbia affatto dimenticato l'eccellente lavoro svolto con il suo precedente Frost/Nixon, scegliendo di servirsi nuovamente della penna di Peter Morgan(Frost/Nixon, The Queen, The Damned United) per raccontare ancora gli anni 70 e un duello senza esclusione di colpi fra due grandi uomini.

That Shadowy Place We Call Our Soul

Richard Nixon: That's our tragedy, you and I Mr. Frost. No matter how high we get, they still look down at us.

David Frost: I really don't know what you're talking about. 

Richard Nixon: Yes you do. Now come on. No matter how many awards or column inches are written about you, or how high the elected office is, it's still not enough. We still feel like the little man. The loser. They told us we were a hundred times, the smart asses in college, the high ups. The well-born. The people who's respect we really wanted. Really craved. And isn't that why we work so hard now, why we fight for every inch? Scrambling our way up in undignified fashion.
